Vandenberg launch viewing in Lompoc, California
Most launches from Vandenberg Space Force Base are SpaceX Falcon 9 flights from Space Launch Complex 4E, many carrying Starlink satellites. The city of Lompoc is the closest base. Watch for two things: the coastal marine layer (fog) that often hides the rocket, and the twilight launches whose sunlit plumes can be seen across much of Southern California.
Closures (as of Oct 2026): the top of Harris Grade Rd, Hawk's Nest, Marshallia Ranch Rd and Hwy 246 are closed to launch viewing. Verify locally before you go.

FAQ
Where can I watch a Vandenberg launch?
Explore Lompoc lists West Ocean Ave intersections (13th St & Arguello, Renwick, Floradale) and Allan Hancock College as public spots. Several hilltop spots are currently closed to launch viewing.
Why couldn't I see the launch from Lompoc?
Coastal fog (the marine layer) often covers the area. You may still hear the rocket. Inland or elevated spots and twilight launches give the best odds.
Can you see Vandenberg launches from Los Angeles?
Twilight launches, when the plume is lit by the Sun against a dark sky, are often visible across Southern California.
