The Geminids are the year's richest meteor shower — the IMO's zenithal hourly rate is about 150. In 2026 the IMO predicts the peak on December 14 at about 14h UT (6 am PST / 9 am EST on the 14th), so in North America the best night is Sunday night, December 13, into Monday morning, December 14. The Moon is only about 25% lit (waxing crescent) at the peak and sets in the mid-evening (around 9 pm in Southern California, computed), leaving the darkest hours after midnight Moon-free. Gemini rises in the early evening, so meteors start soon after dark and pick up as the radiant climbs, typically best around 2 am local time.
The single biggest upgrade you can make is getting away from city lights. Here are designated dark-sky places within a realistic drive of big US metros (drive times are rough and depend on traffic).
